Located in the magnificent setting of the Old Port, the Aquarium of Genoa is one of the best-known attractions of the region. An experience not only for children, but also for adults: it’s filled with exotic animals, as well as useful information about marine species and environmental protection.

The Aquarium is one of the largest in the world and hosts more than 12,000 animals, 200 plant species and 70 ecosystems. It is an ever-evolving reality that is involved in many important projects that aim to preserve the marine ecosystem.

Explore the Aquarium

A visit to the Aquarium of Genoa is the perfect experience for all the nature and animal lovers out there. Come along the discovery route of the aquatic species, divided into thematic areas.

The Shark Bay and the Cetacean Pavilion are among the most popular attractions: the tanks are visible both from below and from the upper floor of the structure, allowing visitors to admire the behaviors of sharks and dolphins from a privileged position.

Seals and manatees are among the most entertaining mammals, with their rounded bodies and gentle, peaceful expressions.

In the Ice Kingdom you can venture out to discover the species that inhabit Antarctica, including the super friendly penguins. An unforgettable experience for children (and adults!), who can observe these funny animals as they play in the water and dive from the rocks.

The Biodiversity Pavilion allows visitors to admire the bright corals and colorful tropical fish up close, as well as reptiles, including turtles and snakes. The stingray tank pre-pandemic offered the chance to pet these unique animals. Unfortunately, the tactile experience is temporarily suspended, but it is still possible to admire them up close.

The visit ends with an immersive experience inside the jellyfish room. You will be able to admire dozens of different jellyfish species up close, all engaged in a hypnotic dance.

Environmental preservation projects

The Aquarium of Genoa is involved in many environmental and marine preservation projects, in collaboration with the Coast Guard, the Ligurian Region and other important institutions worldwide.

The Turtle Emergency Room is probably the most famous one: the aquarium staff is directly involved in rescuing local turtle specimens in need of care, releasing them back into the sea once they have recovered. The Aquarium is also engaged in the safeguard of coral reefs, gray sharks, dolphins, marsh tortoises and jellyfish.
